How old does an athlete need to be to join the Comets?
Registration is open for ages 8-18 yrs. We do allow some younger athletes in on a case by case scenario. Typically we will allow younger siblings to join. Athletes compete against kids who have the same birth year (no matter what month). At age 15, they are grouped into two years (15/16, 17/18). Athletes who are turning 19 in 2023 are eligible to compete as long as they are still 18 years old before Jr. Olympics ends.
Are there tryouts for the team or meets?
There are no tryouts. Every athlete is able to register and compete at meets. There are no limits to how many athletes a team can enter into each event in club track meets.
Where and when are practices?
Practices will be on Tuesday and Thursday 600-730pm and Saturday mornings 1000-1130am. Practices will be held at the BISD stadium. We will start practices on April 11th and have 2-4 weeks of general conditioning and evaluating athletes for specific events. We have multiple event specific coaches and athletes will be assigned to one or more training groups (distance/middle distance/sprints/hurdles/jumps/throws/pole vault/multievents).
What is the required commitment to join?
We do not take attendance. It is our expectation that all athletes will attend all practices and meets. However, we understand that athletes may participate in other sports, have family vacations, ect that will keep them from making every practice. Track and Field is primarily an individual sport...so what you put in is what you get out. We hope that everyone's goal is to qualify for and compete at a championship(s) at the end of the season, but if not, it is our goal that every athlete comes away from the season loving T&F and wanting to return to our club.
What events are offered in club track?
Refer to the T&F event tab on main page to see age specific events. Our club offers coaching in every summer track event.
What championships competitions does the club compete in?
Our club participates in 2 different organizations- AAU and TAAF. Each organization has an end of season championship. Comet athletes may choose to try to qualify for one or both championships.
TAAF (Texas Amateur Athletic Federation) State Level Competition- TAAF State Summer Games of Texas
AAU (American Athletic Union) National Level Competition-AAU Jr. Olympic Games
